During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, China will focus on nine key railway projects in Xinjiang province, including the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway and the Jinghe-Yining-Horgos Railway. Two key railways, the Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway and the Southern Xinjiang Railway, will be upgraded and railway overpasses to the west will be built.
It is expected that by 2010, when there will be 4000 kilometers of rail line in Xinjiang, that the density of the railway network will reach roughly 25 kilometers per 10,000 square kilometers. The passenger transport volume will reach 14.5 million, and 72 million tons of cargo will be freighted through the province.
