    Date: 9-May-2007 Sources: (Xinhua Online)

A consortium consists of Pakistani, Chinese and Jordanian firms has won a contract to implement the Amman-Zarqa light railway project, the Jordanian Minister of Transport Soud Nseirat announced on Tuesday.

The light railway will link Jordan's capital Amman with the industrial city of Zarqa, about 32 kilometers northeast of Amman, at a value of 170-180 million Jordan dinars (about 240-250 million U.S. dollars).

According to Nseirat, the contract might be signed during the World Economic Forum at the Dead Sea which will kick off on May 18.

The train is expected to run 78 trips every day at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour.

According to a report earlier this month, the Jordanian government has promised to provide support to the infrastructure works for the project at a value of 60 million Jordan dinars (about 85 million U.S. dollars), divided in 3 years. (1 Jordan dinar = 1.41 U.S. dollars)
