GAINS in steelmakers on expectations of rising earnings and bargain hunting in nonferrous metal companies led mainland shares higher Friday.
The Shanghai Composite Index ended up 1.1 percent at 5,091.76. The Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.6 percent to 1318.56. Traders said they expect the Shanghai index to face resistance at the psychologically important level of 5,200 this week, but also said the near-term upside may be limited by institutional investors stockpiling cash ahead of several initial public offerings and new listings.
