Chinese shares continued last week's downward trend on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index opening at 3,981.82 points, down 18.93 points, or 0.47 percent lower.
The tripling of the stamp tax on stock trading from 0.1 percent to 0.3 percent prompted the sharpest dive in three months last Wednesday.
The index, which tracks both yuan-denominated A-shares and foreign currency-denominated B-shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, closed at 4,000.744 points on Friday.
