HUAWEI Technologies has entered into a US$50 million agreement with Uganda Telecom to increase the national coverage of Uganda Telecom's GSM network to 70 percent by November.
According to the deal, Huawei will provide and install an additional 200 Base Transmission Stations (BTSs) in the first phase of the planned two phased expansion strategy. When another 100 BTSs are installed in the second phase, Uganda Telecom will have the largest number of BTSs in the country which will result in greater coverage. Signed in Kampala on Friday, the roll out agreement also covers a network upgrade that will see an expansion of the existing state of the art Intelligent Network (IN) and Mobile Switching Center (MSC) switches.
