- Huawei in Vodafone pact for base stations
Date: 29-Jun-2007 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)
HUAWEI Technologies Co. said Wednesday it will provide advanced mobile-phone base stations to Vodafone Group's Spanish unit, highlighting a continued drive by Chinese telecommunications equipment makers to expand overseas.
The base stations will use High Speed Packet Access technology, which is an upgrade to third-generation (3G) Wideband Code Divisions Multiple Access technology, said Huawei. Upgrades in mobile-phone technologies offer faster data transmission speeds.
The Shenzhen-based telecom equipment maker said Vodafone Spain will use the base stations to expand its network. Huawei didn't immediately disclose financial terms.
Like its cross-town rival ZTE Corp., Huawei has boosted exports, with overseas markets accounting for 65 percent of its orders in 2006, up from 58 percent in 2005.
Among the deals with foreign operators this year, Huawei has received contracts from China Mobile Ltd.'s Pakistan unit, CMPak Ltd., and from New Zealand Communications Ltd. Last year, it also received a contract to supply 3G mobile phones to Vodafone.
