- Mobile carriers in mobile TV pact
Date: 14-Dec-2006 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)
THE country's two mobile-phone operators, China Mobile Ltd. and China Unicom Ltd., have signed agreements with the State broadcaster to let consumers watch television shows on mobile phones.
The cooperation between the mobile carriers and China Central Television (CCTV) will play an active role in expanding mobile data services and content, said Xi Guohua, a vice minister at the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), in a speech posted on the ministry's Web site.
The ministry said the pacts were signed Monday.
Domestic telecom carriers have been trying to boost revenue from data services, including mobile TV, as services such as Internet-based phone calling, hurt growth in traditional phone revenue.
The cooperation between CCTV and the country's two mobile carriers also appears to be a way for the mobile carriers to get around licensing difficulties.
The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television regulates the broadcast industry, and the MII regulates the telecommunications industry.
