CHINA Unicom Ltd., China's second-largest mobile operator by subscribers, said yesterday it isn't aware the government intends to impose a caller-pays policy, as reported by the South China Morning Post yesterday.
The Hong Kong-based newspaper report cited an unnamed source close to the Ministry of Information Industry as saying the government will impose a caller-pays policy on the country's two mobile operators as early as next month.
At present, both the caller and receiver pay for a mobile call on the mainland. China's other mobile operator is China Mobile Ltd.
'We haven't heard of the policy that's been reported,'China Unicom spokeswoman Sophia Tso said.
The South China Morning Post report cited the source as saying the decision to adopt the caller-pays policy had already been made, and has been kept secret by the regulator and the two mobile operators.
China Mobile wasn't immediately available for comment.
In another development, China Mobile Communications Corp.'s pre-tax profit in the January-November period totaled 93.2 billion yuan (US$11.92 billion), up 26 percent from the year-earlier period, a person familiar with the situation said yesterday.
Operating revenue at China Mobile Communications, the parent company of China Mobile Ltd., totaled 258.9 billion yuan in the first 11 months, up 21.4 percent from the year-earlier period, the person said.
