- China Unicom profit up on lower costs

CHINA Unicom Ltd., the smaller of the country's two mobile operators, beat forecasts with a 41 percent rise in quarterly earnings on strong subscriber growth and a slower increase in handset amortization and financing costs.
Unicom earned 1.96 billion yuan (US$253.9 million) in the three months ended March, versus 1.39 billion yuan a year earlier, it said in a statement Friday. The result beat a mean forecast of 1.73 billion yuan, according to three analysts.
