- Unicom won't be center of restructuring

CHINA Unicom vice president Yang Xiaowei said his company, China's second-largest mobile carrier by users, won't be the center of (the country's) telecom industry restructuring, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
He said China Unicom is dividing its operations staff into two teams, one for its Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network, another for its Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications network, because it is hard to coordinate deployment of both networks with just one team, according to Xinhua.
But the splitting of the operations team isn't linked to market expectations that China Unicom could be split, he said, according to the report.
Analysts have speculated China Unicom's operations could be split as part of a restructuring involving the country's two major fixed-line operators, China Netcom Group Corp. and China Telecom Corp.
They say one of the fixed-line operators could take over one of China Unicom's networks, while China Unicom could continue operating its other network following a merger with the other fixed-line operator.
In recent weeks, China Unicom and government officials have suggested these expectations are unfounded, and Yang's latest remarks also suggest such an industry restructuring isn't likely.
