- Unicom starts offering 2.5G services

CHINA Unicom Ltd.'s parent company said it has started offering data services based on a more advanced version of its current Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network.
The parent, China United Telecommunications Corp., will offer multimedia messaging, Internet access and some applications, such as mobile banking or e-mail, based on Sun Microsystem Inc.'s Java software language, in 70 cities, it said in a statement on its Web site. It said the new services are based on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), widely seen as a step between second-generation (2G) GSM technology and third-generation (3G) mobile-phone technologies like Wideband Code Division Multiple Access.
