China's Macao will attract more than 560,000 Malaysian visitors to visit the city in 2008, which is equivalent to 40 percent growth compared to the estimated total arrivals of 400,000 in 2007, a representative of Macao Government Tourist Office (MGTO) said on Wednesday.
'The challenge put to all of us is to not only increase the numbers of Malaysian arrivals to Macao but also to increase the overnight stays as well,' said Tunku Iskandar, representative of the MGTO.
2007 has been both a fruitful year in which Macao has welcomed some 340,723 Malaysian visitors from January to November, achieving a growth of 97.3 percent on a year-on-year basis, making Malaysia the fourth largest source of visitors for Macao, according to the MGTO.
'Macao is diversifying its tourism products such as culture, convention & exhibition, leisure, entertainment, events, cuisine and retail,' Iskandar said.
One of the initiatives by the MGTO in Malaysia was to establish a group of travel agent named 'Amigos (means Friends in Portuguese)Macao,' who are keen to actively promote Macao as a destination in their tour programmers.
