Construction of an innovative hotel built into the side of an abandoned quarry will soon start construction in Shanghai's southeastern Songjiang District, hotel developer Shimao Group told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
The hotel, part of Shanghai Shimao Wonderland, a mixed-use project in Sheshan National Tourism and Resort Area and covering a total 428,200 square meters, will probably begin construction later this month, according to Sun Huiting, a corporate affairs department official.
The hotel, to be built in a 100-meter-deep quarry that is partly flooded, will have one floor under the water level and 17 floors above, built into the quarry face.
When completed in 2009, the hotel will have more than 400 guestrooms on 15 floors, with a thermal spring pool near the water surface and an underwater restaurant and cafe. There will also be a 100-meter waterfall alongside, according to the company's Website.
Besides the five-star hotel, the project will also feature a theme park, an experience center, and indoor entertainment such as an ocean world, sports and recreation center, water park, shopping center and food court, the company said.
Hong Kong-listed Shimao Property Holdings Ltd is an integrated real estate developer owned by billionaire Xu Rongmao, the second-richest person on the Chinese mainland by the recently released Forbes magazine rich list with a net worth of 7.3 billion U.S. dollars. The company had 28 projects under construction scattered over 20 large and medium cities on the Chinese mainland by July 31.
