- Credit database covers about half population

THE country's new credit database already covers almost one out of two Chinese and 12 million firms, a central bank official said Tuesday.
China launched the database in January after two years of preparation to help banks better control credit risk. By the end of August, it held information on 580 million people out of a population of 1.3 billion, said Shao Fujun, head of the central bank's credit information system bureau. The bureau provides lenders with information about individuals' records in making loan and credit card payments as well as utility and telephone bills, Shao said. Another database for corporate credit information, launched only in July, tracks not only whether firms are keeping up on their loans but also their energy consumption, product quality, pollution record and performance in paying migrant workers on time.
